Former aged care peak body head to lead North Qld PHN

Former aged care peak body head Sean Rooney has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) Board.

NQPHN Board Chair Terry Mehan said, “Sean has a demonstrated track record of achievement as a CEO, designing and successfully executing strategy, effectively managing stakeholder engagement in complex and contested environments, and leading people and organisations through times of change,” Mehan said.

“He brings practical experience where the health and aged care sectors meet and has served as CEO of member-based organisations, the Australian Medical Local Alliance (AMLA) and Leading Age Services Australia (LASA).

“I am looking forward to building on the strong foundations already in place, strengthening stakeholder and partner relationships, and working with the NQPHN team on improving the health outcomes for all North Queenslanders,” Rooney said.

“It’s my belief that health care should be accessible to all, and my focus will be to work with our teams, stakeholders and communities to achieve the goals of the organisation.”

Rooney’s appointment follows former CEO Robin Whyte’s decision not to renew her contract so she can relocate to be closer to family.

“The board and I would like to express our deep appreciation for Robin’s substantial contribution to NQPHN during her three-year tenure and wish her all the best for the future,” Mehan said.

Rooney commenced as NQPHN CEO on Monday, 6 November 2023 and is based in Townsville. NQPHN also has offices in Cairns and Mackay.
